Letter to the government: Assurance required that you will condemn the US act of aggression against Venezuela

We wrote to the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary on the 5 January 2026 to demand urgent assurance they will condemn the US acts of aggression against Venezuela with the kidnapping of their head of State, Nicolas Maduro.

Dear Keir Starmer,

Urgent assurance required that your government will condemn the US act of aggression against Venezuela

At the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF UK) we have just received a very detailed and comprehensive letter from Baroness Chapman of Darlington,Minister of State for International Development and Africa, responding to a letter from WILPF about the critical situation in Sudan.

We are now anticipating that you can provide us with similarly robust assurances of your government’s actions in response to the news of the US unprovoked attacks on Venezuela on January 3, apparently also kidnapping SrNicolas Maduro, head of this sovereign state.

In spite of the US, UK and Venezuelan membership of the United Nations, established in 1945 to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”, the president of the United States has seen fit to authorise such a blatant militaryattack on Venezuela.

As an NGO with recognised status at the UN since its inception, WILPF UK utterly condemns the actions of the US and expects HM government to take robust action at the United Nations and through private diplomacy with the US. War is never justified and this action sets a dangerous precedent.

Please assure us that you will join us in utterly condemning this act of imperialist aggression and let us know the actions you have taken to confront the threat by US President Donald Trump of further military action.
