Letter to the government: Hold Israel to account

On the 21 November we wrote to the Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer MP; and Secretary of State, The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP,  to demand that the UK government to take action to hold the state of Israel to account over the ongoing destruction in Gaza and the West Bank. We encourage you to use this a template for your own letter to your MP or local press.

Dear Prime Minister / Secretary of State

UK government urgently required to hold Israel to account

We are writing on behalf of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom UK (WILPF) to express our deep concern at the ongoing tragedy in Gaza, to urge you to action and, in particular, to urge you to publicly hold Israel to account.

Benjamin Netanyahu seems to have achieved his appalling objectives in Gaza. By agreeing to Donald Trump’s “ceasefire” he has got the rest of the world off his back and looking the other way, while he continues the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank and the destruction of infrastructure and environment.

Israel has retained total control over more than half of the area of the overcrowded land of Gaza and the Israel Defense Forces are still able to kill civilians indiscriminately (more than 280 since the so-called “ceasefire” began a month ago). In the West Bank settlers continue to bulldoze Palestinian villages and destroy their olive trees, on which so many Palestinians depend.

Meanwhile, Israel is still allowing only a very limited amount of humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip. Although 600 trucks a day were agreed, this is not happening, severely restricting essential and urgent materials for rebuilding, particularly to reconstruct the infrastructure for reinstating drinking water and power.

No progress is reported on establishing a monitored stabilisation force to police and safeguard life in Gaza and, vitally and urgently, to facilitate the total withdrawal of the IDF.

Now we have IDF conscripts reported in the Israeli press admitting to targeting civilians approaching the aid hubs run by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

We urge you to publicly hold Israel to account, using all the UK’s influence to deliver peace and justice to the region.

Yours in peace
