Letter to the Leader of the opposition: Concern over Conservative Party plans to dismantle net-zero commitments

On the 7th September 2025 we wrote to The Right Hon Kemi Badenoch MP, Conservative Party Leader, to express our concern over the reckless Conservative Party plans to dismantle net-zero commitments. Please do use this as a template for your own letter to your local MP or press.

Dear Kemi Badenoch,

Concern over reckless Conservative Party plans to dismantle net-zero commitments

As we write to you from the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), it is difficult to imagine where you have been this summer while wildfires have scorched vast stretches of land in France, Spain, Greece, and even in Scotland and the North York Moors. Earlier in the year Spain experienced unprecedented sudden violent floods that took lives; now it is the turn of Pakistan.

These violent developments are the outcome of the man-made world climate crisis. There is no doubt that burning fossil fuels has been the major creator of this climate emergency.

People need our leaders to understand and act on the knowledge that the climate crisis is the greatest and most immediate threat to life on earth. All the remaining fossil fuels must stay in the ground, and every government must use every incentive to speed up the development of every kind of renewable energy: wind, wave, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric.

Eighty-four per cent of British people think that the UK government must do more to deal with the climate crisis. We must transition our economies away from fossil fuel dependency. Simultaneously nations must stop squandering the resources we have, whether minerals, timber, farmland, wild-life or biodiversity. We must transform our economies and societies to create a future where people and planet can thrive together. This is a truly just transition.

Short-term national advantages in terms of job creation, controlling national energy supply or supporting British industry, bear no comparison to the dire and disastrous outcomes of the climate crisis which we are already experiencing and which will worsen each year into the future.

Supporting policies that address the critical climate emergency is not a position that you can pick up or discard for immediate political advantage. It is essential for humankind. Conservative Party plans to dismantle net-zero commitments are nothing short of reckless.

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and we look forward to your response.

Yours in peace
