Meeting notes
Held at Brighthelm Centre, on 29th January 2024.
This workshop was a follow-on from the survey conducted at the end of 2023 on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls The aim of the survey and the workshop was ‘to inform the development of the city’s forthcoming Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy.’ The workshop was very well attended by about 40 women of all ages and 5 men. These included Brighton and Hove City councillors, including the leader of the council, Bella Sankey (Labour).
Amongst the many topics that were discussed were –
a]. Women’s safety and technology,
b]. Sexism in the education system
c]. Women’s safety and future design of cities, exterior spaces and the interior of buildings
d], Improvements in the way domestic violence is dealt with by the police and the courts
e]. Independent support for victims of violence, when dealing with the police and the family courts
f]. Better funding for those services that do exist already.
A report following on from the workshop will be released by Brighton & Hove City Council in due course.
