Secretary, Director, Branch Representative, Scotland

Fiona McOwan

Fiona began her career studying B.Sc. Chemistry at Heriot Watt University, completing it and graduating in 1975 with B.Sc.2.1 Honours. Despite being offered a job in industry she opted to train as a High School Teacher and qualified with the Post Graduate Teaching Certificate in 1976.

Fiona taught for two long periods, firstly from 1976-1995 in the then Lothian Region. It was here that she first met the sadly late Anne Scott, and they became close friends through their shared interest in gender equity and global justice. It was through Anne that Fiona first joined WILPF and attended her first GAPS meeting in Scotland, where she first met Janet Fenton. Fiona was pleased to meet her in person as knew Janet as an office-bearer of Scottish CND which Fiona joined early in her teaching career. In the following 15 years she worked in 5 different posts, all of which had a focus on equality and partnership working. Fiona returned to teaching from 2010 in Fife and retired from this in 2019. She joined the Scottish Green Party in 2014 and is an active member at a local and national level.

Retiring from her day job has allowed her to increase her involvement in a number of organisations including Scottish WILPF, as Co-Convener, and in WILPF UK.
