Letter to the US Ambassador: Convey the views of the British public to Trump

On the 28th September 2025 we wrote to Warren A. Stephens, Ambassador of the United States of America to the United Kingdom, to request that he convey the views of the British public to the US Administration.

Your Excellency

WILPF women convey widely held views in the UK requesting that these feature in your reports to the White House

We are writing to you from our 110-year-old organisation – the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF UK). We understand that you have a significant role as ambassador to the Court of St James, to convey your understanding of the views of the British public to the US Administration.

Your President, Donald Trump, was recently generously entertained by our Head of State and Government members. Unfortunately, he did not experience the “weather on the street”.

For example, in London we are proud to be represented by one of the UK’s well-integrated minority communities as mayor. Sadiq Khan has introduced, among other things, vital regulations to improve air quality in the capital, better public transport and additional social housing. Sir Sadiq has won the election for mayor three times and has the support of the majority of London citizens. Each year we welcome millions of visitors, including many from the USA, who enjoy our safe and beautiful city.

Elsewhere in the UK we have strong, diverse communities living mostly in harmony, despite attempts to divide us. There has never been any hint that Sharia law might be introduced in the UK.

To many British citizens it is quite distressing to hear Donald Trump use his elected role within the United States, standing on the podium of the United Nations, to disparage that vital international organisation representing the governments of 193 nations.

Donald Trump’s personal obsessions about, for example, European governments or international conflicts may or may not represent those of US legislators, but they inevitably get enormous publicity in the wider media.

WILPF women believe that we are conveying to you views that are widely held in the UK and hope that they will feature in your reports to the White House.

Yours in peace
