Letter to the government: Food, water and medical aid supplies massed at the borders MUST be allowed to pour into Gaza

On May 26, WILPF UK wrote to Prime Minister, Kier Starmer, to demand the UK government press for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, stop selling arms to Israel and facilitate humanitarian access. Please use this letter as a template to write to your own Member of Parliament or local press to press those in power to take meaningful action.

Dear Prime Minister

Food, water and medical aid supplies massed at the borders MUST be allowed to pour into Gaza

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF UK) is pleased to congratulate HM government, together with those of Canada and France, for their recent statement condemning the actions in Gaza of the Netanyahu government of Israel.

We are deeply affected by the comments of Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the United Nations, highlighting the starvation already affecting, in particular, babies in Gaza. The food, water and medical aid supplies massed at the borders must be allowed to pour into Gaza.

The negative response of Benjamin Netanyahu to the joint statement of Britain, France and Canada indicates that the time is already overdue for the ”further concrete actions” threatened in your statement.

In particular, we urge you immediately to stop all arms shipments to Israel, and to any third country that is known to sell arms to Israel. In addition, we note that DeclassifiedUK reported this week: “At 2.28pm yesterday, David Lammy told parliament the UK was suspending trade negotiations with Israel given the “appalling” situation in Gaza. 4.5 hours later, at 7pm UK time, another UK spy plane took off in aid of Israeli intelligence to surveil Gaza.”

Please use the UK’s influence to press for an immediate ceasefire as a first step to ending this war and the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. We also urge you to make it UK government policy to recognise the State of Palestine.

We look forward to hearing that you have taken these actions.

Yours in peace
