Leafleting in New Road on ‘Close the Bases Day’.
World Beyond War organised a global day of action. Anna, Anne, Valerie, Caroline, Celia, Michelle and Jenny held banners aloft and spent a good hour leafleting and talking to people who stopped to question the return of US nuclear weapons to Lakenheath in Su\olk. As well as talking about the Peace camp that will be held at Lakenheath we reminded people of the L3Harris weapons parts factory on our doorstep that we continue to monitor
International Women’s Day
As we were unable to have a stall due to the lack of an organised event at the Dome, we were pleased to be able to take the opportunity to take part in a panel discussion in the Jubilee library.
It was well attended with many women seated and also standing to hear the speakers, one panellist was from Eritrea, another from Sudan, the third woman was from China and Jenny from the UK representing Wilpf.
There was a lively discussion with the audience participating with strong views and it could have lasted longer if that had been possible. In my ‘thank you’ emails to the library and to Diversity Resource International [who proposed the panel], I suggested that having regular discussion groups would possibly be quite popular but it would need to to be a self-organising group. They could choose a topic beforehand, and advertise it via the library and hold it in the community space. I have no idea if that sounds plausible but I felt it would be worth a try.
Women in Black
We continue to stand together at the War Memorial on Fridays 1-2pm. We hand out our leaflets and we shall use the Lakenheath leaflets in the weeks around the peace camp there from 14th- 26th April. We are looking forward to more of the sunshine to warm our bones!
