Letter to the Prime Minister: De-escalate conflict in Ukraine

Dear Prime Minister,

What is currently happening in Ukraine is horrific and there is an urgent need for an immediate cease fire.  War is never the answer to any international dispute.  We are urging that discussions should start immediately with our NATO allies and Ukraine to identify a significant and responsible mediator who would be acceptable to all parties, including President Putin.  The sooner preparations for mediation are in place the better, so that substantial negotiations can begin at the earliest opportunity. Any delegation seeking reconciliation must include a substantial proportion of women.

The invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the fact that nuclear weapons continue to present a terrible danger to the whole world.  Yet we already have an agreed UN treaty, (The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons), that outlaws these weapons that are causing humanity so much fear and danger.  It just needs Russia and the three NATO governments (US, UK, and France) currently holding around 12,000 nuclear weapons with massive destructive power, to recognise that the TPNW provides an answer to this problem.

It is important that the government and the media have made sure that the British public is aware of every move and catastrophe in the war unfolding in Ukraine.  It is sad and significant, however, that we are not made aware of similar casualties, bombings and quantities of refugees in Yemen and Ethiopia to mention just two of the on-going conflicts killing and displacing people across the globe.  The UK should be able to welcome refugees from all conflicts in an equitable manner.

Sanctions may be having an effect on Putin but sending more arms into the region is just adding fuel to the fire.  Please listen to the many people in Russia, in the Ukraine, in Britain and around the world calling for a cease fire and talks in place of war.
