“Women, Peace and Welfare” by Ann Oakley

This is a substantial but readable book by a leading sociologist and feminist. Ann provides the context for the development of WILPF, (covered in chapter six). The book outlines the contribution of several hundred suffrage women in Britain, Europe and North America who, from the late nineteenth century, up until many were enfranchised by 1920, formed a network of activities and ideas. This book reveals how women without the vote were still able to provide the foundations of the social welfare we take for granted at the present time. They worked for internationalism and peace and built on each other’s ideas and achievements.
