SUMMARY:WILPF UK Webinar: More than a Metaphor: Climate Catastrophe\, Colonial Political Economy\, and Reparative Democracy
DESCRIPTION:The unfolding climate catastrophe provides one of the starkest contexts for understanding the continuing legacies of colonialism within contemporary societies. It took over thirty years\, from the first report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, for the word ‘colonialism’ to enter its official lexicon. Even where colonialism is mentioned\, it is often used as metaphor to describe a variety of acts of domination and control in relation to climate change. The direct and continuing significance of colonialism to climate change is less often articulated. In this talk\, I take a historical sociological perspective to the broader topic via an account of the colonial political economy of the British empire in India and its relationship to famine. Famine is of fundamental importance precisely because it is what climate change threatens for a significant proportion of the world’s population. While Amartya Sen has famously argued that democracy is the necessary condition for ending famines\, this does not account for the fact that Britain claimed to be a democracy across the period of colonial rule when it was producing famines in India. I focus on the relationship between colonialism and democracy in the context of climate change to ask what is politically necessary to address this situation. \nGurminder K Bhambra is Professor of Historical Sociology at the University of Sussex. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Historical Society and has written extensively on the relationship\, and significance\, of colonialism to the structure of the social sciences. Her latest research project is on ‘Varieties of Empire’ and she is also lead editor of a forthcoming textbook\,The Modern World after Colonialism. \nZoom details: \nLink: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86848164064?pwd=309iF9VxOLdxraz7FR23VNoECHfQuU.1\nMeeting ID: 868 4816 4064\nPasscode: 041163

SUMMARY:Women in Black vigil: Trafalgar Square
DESCRIPTION:WILPF members regularly attend Women in Black vigils. \nThe London vigil is part of the Women in Black (WiB) world-wide network of women. We are committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice\, war\, militarism and other forms of violence. We hold our vigil every week (see details above) in silence and wearing black. Each vigil has a specific theme\, which is reflected in the placards we carry and the leaflets we hand out. Each week we have a letter which we ask members of the public to sign\, which calls on the British government to take action on a specific issue. Currently our vigils focus on: opposition to British military engagements or threat of ‘interventions’ in other countries; opposing renewal of the Trident nuclear weapons system; calling for justice for Palestinians; and for steps to end violence in the DR Congo; and for ending the arms trade. Our vigils are for women only\, and present a women’s or gendered position on each issue. \nTime and place: Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm at the Edith Cavell statue. It is in St.Martin’s Place\, London WC2\, opposite the entrance to the National Portrait Gallery\, and not far from Trafalgar Square. \nEmail/Join mailing list:WiBinfo@gn.apc.org \nTwitter: @WiB_London \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/womeninblack.london/ \nVigil homepage: http://london.womeninblack.org/

SUMMARY:WILPF UK Webinar 'Feminist approaches to challenging the increasingly militarised world'
DESCRIPTION:oin our next webinar to hear from guest speaker Janet Fenton\, WILPF UK Executive Committee member and International Liaison\, to learn about how we can use our feminist lens to challenge the increasingly militarised world. \nJanet is is a Scottish Quaker eco-feminist\, active on disarmament since she was 13 and part of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) since its inception. She spent a decade as Coordinator with Peace & Justice Scotland\, and oversaw Scotland’s for Peace there\, engaging the new devolved administration in Scotland on peace\, along with Scottish Faith groups and Trade Unions. Her background was in issue-based play-wrighting*\, community/arts development in Scotland and Ireland. She set up the environmental\, arts and social justice resource\, the Ever Green Trust\, and ran it for many years. \nJanet is an active participant in Trident Ploughshares\, Scottish CND\, and WILPF\, and is a director of the Nuclear information Service\, and Secretary of the Scottish Parliament Nuclear Disarmament Cross Party Group. As a consultant with the Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy (AIDD) she is a member of the ICAN International Steering Group. She is also Organiser with Secure Scotland\, a small NGO working in Scotland to challenge the prevailing ideas of security that increase inequality at grassroots\, national\, transnational and parliamentary levels. She writes briefings and opinion pieces. \n*Play-wrighting is a technical term. It is like wheel wrighting\, or ship wrighting\, about making a show or a drama using impro\, scripting and other performance techniques\, as opposed to play writing \,which is more of a a literary pursuit. \n  \nZoom details\nZoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81123416024?pwd=1apV9e0sTI1vaafm7ROqSCwBrJNdYP.1\nMeeting ID: 811 2341 6024\nPasscode: 341872

\nEmail/Join mailing list: WiBinfo@gn.apc.org \nTwitter: @WiB_London \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/womeninblack.london/ \nVigil homepage: http://london.womeninblack.org/
