SUMMARY:WILPF Webinar: Abya Yala in the Crosshairs - Conversations on Anti-Militarism in the Region
DESCRIPTION:Abya Yala has become a central territory in the U.S. war geopolitics. Under narratives like the “war on drugs” and “hemispheric security\,” militarisation and territorial control continue to expand\, reinforced by right-wing governments aligned with U.S. militarist policies. \nThis increasingly aggressive deployment turns security into a tool of social control\, justifying surveillance\, criminalisation of movements\, and repression against those defending their territories. \nIn this webinar\, we will explore how this doctrine operates in Colombia\, Argentina\, Mexico\, and Brazil\, and collectively reflect on strategies to confront the advance of militarism. \nDate & Time: Nov 25 | 18:00 Rio de Janeiro\, 16:00 Bogotá\, 15:00 Mexico City\nLanguage: Spanish with interpretation into Portuguese and English \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Alternative Remembrance Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The National Alternative Remembrance Ceremony takes place every year on Remembrance Sunday in Tavistock Square\, London. Following speeches\, those attending observe two minutes’ silence and white poppy wreaths are laid on the Conscientious Objectors’ Commemorative Stone\, in memory of all victims of war\, both civilian and military\, past and present. \nWith speakers including: \n– Sir Mark Rylance – Oscar-winning actor\, director\, playwright\, peace campaigner and PPU member. \n– Rachel Taylor from Every Casualty Counts\, an international charity dedicated to ensuring every life lost in armed conflict is recognised. \n– Hosted by PPU member Kate Smurthwaite – feminist activist\, comedian and star of the News at Katevideo series. \nShortly after the ceremony\, the Movement for the Abolition of War will hold their annual Remembrance Lecture nearby at Hamilton House at 3pm\, with Lord John Alderdice speaking on ‘Ending Wars’. We encourage people to head to the lecture after the ceremony is over. \nAt 5pm – also nearby – Every Casualty Counts have organised a live projection onto Friends House\, as part of their Memorial 2025 launch. They ask everyone to join them to remember some of the people who lost their lives to armed conflict in 2024. \nFor more remembrance events featuring white poppies around the UK\, please visit ppu.org.uk/events in the run up to Remembrance Sunday.

SUMMARY:WILPF UK Webinar: Reclaiming the women\, peace and security agenda’
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom UK (WILPF UK) invite you\, your colleagues\, members and networks to join our next webinar to hear from guest speaker Dr Sophia Close\, Gender\, peace and security consultant and WILPF UK Company Secretary\, to learn about and discuss how we can use our feminist lens to reclaim the women\, peace and security agenda. \nDr Sophia Close will lead this webinar presentation and discussion based around her recently co-authored report with the European Institute of Peace ‘Status Quo or Bold Adaptation? Reclaiming the Women\, Peace and Security Agenda’. The report calls for a critical rethinking of the core principles behind the women\, peace and security (WPS) agenda to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness in the rapidly shifting global context. As the political space for gender equality narrows and WPS commitments are increasingly eroding\, the agenda’s vision and practices must be adjusted to respond to contemporary and future challenges in conflict prevention\, resolution and peace-building. Far from being a lost cause\, the women\, peace and security agenda must be revitalised to address rising militarisation and securitisation\, reaffirming its purpose as a transformative framework for inclusive and sustainable peace. \nZoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84765215209 \nNo password required \n
